The Prayer of Faith
Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. ~ Mark 11:24 NKJV
What is the key to getting answers to our prayers? What does the Bible say about praying effectively? How can we experience the confidence that turns our requests into reality?
One of the greatest lessons on prayer is found in Mark 11.
Let me set the stage for you. Jesus had arrived in Jerusalem to spend the last week of His life on earth. On Palm Sunday, people had given Him a tremendous welcome, laying palm branches before Him and shouting Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!
Shortly after that, Jesus saw a fig tree in full bloom. He approached it expecting fruit to eat, but found none. Jesus cursed the tree, saying, Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.
The following day, Jesus and His disciples walked past the same tree. The disciples were amazed to find that the tree had withered from the root, and that it had died literally overnight. They asked Him, How did this happen?
So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.”
This is the key to answered prayer: Have faith in God. So often, we put our faith in the wrong thing. We put our faith in our ability to pray loud and long. We put our faith in how much we have fasted. We put our faith in how much of the Bible we have read. We put our faith in particular ministers or churches or forms of prayer.
But Jesus says it very simply: Have faith in God. Don’t have faith in your form. Don’t have faith in your ritual. Have faith in the living God. When you do, nothing will be impossible. Jesus goes on to say, Whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.
Jesus teaches us a way to pray that is contrary to the natural mind. The world wants to see and then believe; Jesus tells us to believe and then we will see. The next time you pray, fix your thoughts on God’s unlimited ability and goodness. If you pray His way—if you believe without doubting in your heart—then you will have what you are asking for.
