From Barren to Blessed

From Barren to Blessed : Zhazha Esteban Gloria’s Testimony

Genesis 21:1 NIV (personalized)

Now the Lord was gracious to Allen and Zha-zha as he had said, and the Lord did for Allen and Zha-zha what he had promised.

Thank You Lord for Your SACRED TRUST given to us. Thank You for this gift of life… Continue to breathe life and may this child grow in wisdom, in stature and in favor with God and all men. We offer our firstborn to You and we lift Your Name up… Miracles do happen even in this present time as You did in the Bible.

As we look back and remember Your faithfulness, on how You have covered us under the shadow of Your wings… we can’t simply hide this story. It is not our story anymore but it is Jesus’ story working mightily in our lives.

June 9, 2012
I was diagnosed thru hysterogram that both of my fallopian tubes are blocked. Since I was advised to take only mefenamic acid and no anaesthesia was administered, I felt the excruciating pain. It can be described to be like “labor pains”. To those who have experienced it knew exactly how painful it is. But the result was even more painful. Because that means we will never have children, not even a child through natural means. The doctor told us that our only hope to have children is thru Invitro Fertilization, a procedure that will cost around 350T – 400T with only 20% chances of getting pregnant. Our hope to have children were all shattered. All seemed dark and hopeless. There were nights that I will simply cry, asking why we have to go through IVF. I was saddened by the fact that I will not be able to give Allen even a child. It seemed contradicting to what God’s word says,to what God has promised. We are thankful for our family and friends and ninongs and ninangs who have been so supportive. They battled with us and for us in prayers.

July 14, 2012
We were endorsed to an OB at St. Lukes but the Lord led us to Dra. Jing Fernandez instead. She discussed with us not only about IVF, but everything we need and wanted to know in getting pregnant. We were asked to prepare for that huge amount around 450T – 500T if we want to pursue IVF. But she advised that I go through ultrasound first. So I did. It didn’t frighten me since this is not my first time to go through ultrasound. This ultrasound took longer than the usual to find out what might be the cause of the tubal blockage, if there are myoma big enough to cause the tubal blockage. Results can be seen online so we left the hospital after the procedure and checked the result as we are on our way home. The result showed a myoma about 1.2 x 1.2 x 0.9 cm. My heart was filled with sadness again. It seemed that the more the tests we do the more problems arises.

However, Dra. Jing said that there’s nothing to worry about as it is just a small myoma. We went back to her after a month. We were advised that we deal with the myoma first even if it could not be the cause of the tubal blockage. The myoma is too small and was far from the fallopian tubes to be the cause of the blockage. I was given injectable meds (leuprolex), a shot once a month for 2-3 months. After the 2nd month, we repeated the ultrasound to check if the myoma went smaller if not gone. The myoma was reduced to 0.02 x 1.00 x 0.84cm.

August 31, 2012.
We dared to hope in our Lord Jesus Christ that He will open my fallopian tubes and that He will give us sons and daughters. We prayed about it and trust in the Lord for His power and might and grace. With the help of our prayer warriors (thanks to my mom, my brother manny and his wife rita, to our ninong sonny and ninang ruth, ninong rey and ninang gina, our dear friends diana and pat, grace, to joyce and neri and to many unnamed intercessors for they battled with us through prayers, their prayers strengthened our faith in Jesus Christ even more).

October 15, 2012
We continued with the last shot in October. We were advised to return in November and have the hysterogram repeated.

We prayed that we don’t have to go through IVF. That whatever amount we are able to save will be given to HIS ministry instead. But God cleared our motives in giving him the money. One time, God asked me “What is your motive in giving ME money? Are you trying to bribe me?” To which, I answered, “Of course not Lord, for everything we have has come from You. We can never outgive You. We are giving it to You out of gratitude for the miracles that You will be doing. We can never ever repay You for Your love and grace.”

With faith in our hearts, that Jesus who has given us His life on the cross for us to have a life and the fullness of it, we carried on. We just felt in our hearts, He is at work and our miracles is on its way. God impressed in our hearts that we will not go through IVF, that God already healed me, and the repeat hysterogram will just be a proof of His healing touch.

November 15, 2012.

The Lord was so comforting that day. There are so many promises from His word while I was doing my quiet time. He told me that He is with me. That there will be boys and girls playing in the streets. So many promises. I couldn’t help but cry.

The repeat hysterogram is with anaesthesia this time, so that I will not feel the pain. The last thing I knew was saying “Lord, bahala ka na po. Let Your will be done.” I woke up in the recovery room. I asked Allen around 5 times or more about the result. The first time I asked him, he answered saying “Ok na ang baby, nasa nursery na.” The I slept again. The 2nd time, I remembered, Allen said, “OK NA. Parehong clear ang tubes.” I slept again because of the effect of the anaesthesia. The 3rd time, I asked him again and I told him to send text messages to all of our family and friends and churchmates to thank them for their prayers. But I still asked my OB’s secretary the result, to which she answered,”Ok na ma’am.. cleared ang fallopian tubes nyo at sandaling sandali lang, pwede na nga pong alang anaesthesia eh.”

Indeed, Jesus is a miracle-working God. Praise Him for His goodness!

January 2, 2013

I got my monthly period back. The effect of Leuprolex will cause menstruation to stop (pseudo menopausal). I was advised to take femara to induce egg production.

January 14, 2013

I went back to the hospital and have the ultrasound to check if there were eggs that are ready for maturity. Praise God because there’s a matured egg on my left ovary. It was then induced for ovulation. My OB told me that if after 2weeks my period will not come, then I maybe pregnant.

February 7, 2013.

I am supposed to have my period on February 1, 2013,but it did not come. I asked Allen if I should take the pregnancy test, to which he answered, “yes”. Before I begin with the test, I prayed that this test will complete the miracle that God ha started doing in my life. Double lines appeared! IT’S POSITIVE!

February 9, 2013
Our 1st pregnancy check-up. Dra. Jing told us that we still need to wait for another week to confirm the pregnancy thru ultrasound. The positive pregnancy test will just give us a possible pregnancy, but the ultrasound will give result if it is intrauterine pregnancy (meaning it is in the right place).

February 16, 2013
We are the 1st in line for the ultrasound. Our baby is at the right place, yolk sac measuring 0.34cm and with a heartbeat of 131bpm. Our baby is such a tiny creature with what it seemed a little ball on its side.

Luke 1:36 (personalized)
She who was said to be barren is in her 6th week of pregnancy! To God be the glory!

God might have introduced me to all the barren women of the Bible from Sarah, Rebekkah, the mother of Rachel, to Minoah’s wife (Samson’s mother), Hannah of the old testament to Elizabeth of the new testament… but all of them were able to have a child or children, for nothing is impossible with God! God is in the business of doing miracles then and He is still in the same business!

TO GOD BE ALL THE GLORY! Thank You for the UNUSUAL FAVOR! To Jesus our Lord and Savior, THE GIVER OF A NEW HOPE AND A BRIGHTER TOMORROW, who can do more than we can ask, think or imagine, to Him who is faithful to complete what He has started… BE THE HONOR AND GLORY BOTH NOW AND FOREVERMORE!

TO JESUS ALL OUR BEST! GOD DID IT AND HE WILL DO MORE!

Generous Giving

Bible Passage: II Corinthians 8-9

The human need this passage meets is: to develop generous giving that is based upon a person’s relationship to God.

Learning Goals: By the end of this session, each learner should be able to. . .

(know) Understand the source of true generous giving.
(feel) Gratitude to God for allowing you to give Him praise through your generous giving.
(do) Make a plan to show generous giving.
Hook

In The Day They Shook the Plum Tree Arthur H. Lewis tells the strange, but true story of Hetty Green. She died in 1916, the richest and most detested female in America. She had $100 million dollars in the bank, but ate crackers and cold oatmeal because she was too cheap to buy good food. The last 20 years of her life she lived with a painful hernia because she would not spend the $150 for an operation. Her own son’s leg had to be amputated because she was too cheap to take him to a doctor. One one occasion, she searched half the night for a lost 2 cent postage stamp. Once she tried to forge the signature of her deceased aunt in a vain attempt to accumulate a million dollars more. She cheated her employees and even withheld payment from her attorneys until they took her to court.

She had two children: Ned and Sylvia.

Ned spent $3 million dollars a year on: yachts, coins, stamps, diamond studded chastity belts, female teenage “wards”, pornography, orchid culture, and Texas politics.

Sylvia kept $31 million dollars in a bank that paid no interest. She employed a hard-working Italian laborer as her gardener for 34 years. In all that time she spoke to him twice: Once to tell him that he would be docked an hour’s pay (40 cents) for being late to work. The other time to tell him to keep his daughter off the premises because she didn’t like children.

They’re all dead now — Hetty, Ned and Sylvia. Almost without exception, these millions were distributed where they were least needed and where they accomplished a minimum of good.
Generally speaking many Christians (when it comes to their attitude toward money) are more like Hetty Green and her children than like Christ. I’m simply talking about being self-centered instead of Christ-centered; being stingy instead of generous.

Transition

The truth is that many Christians keep some places within their hearts off limits to Christ’s control. Receiving the grace of God often provides a wonderful sense of relief, peace, joy and hope. Letting Jesus change us and transform us to be like Him requires a kind of surrender that often feels like death.

Want to know the privilege and purpose of being God’s child? What’s Missing Inside You? is a Bible study with numerous real-life stories.
As a result it seems easier to become a Christian than it does to be transformed into the likeness of Christ. And no where is this more true than in the area of being a person known for generous giving.

To help us, Paul describes the source of generous giving in II Corinthians 8.

Bible Input

Read II Corinthians 8:1-7

In Acts 11 the Bible tells of a severe famine that devastated Jerusalem and the surrounding area. The first offering taken to help the Jewish brothers in Judea came from the church in Antioch. The offering was sent to the elders by Barnabas and Paul. The book of Acts and Paul’s own letters tell of his efforts to maintain a flow of funds to the people in Judea. With this concern in mind, Paul teaches the “New Covenant Theology of Giving” everywhere he went.

In II Corinthians 8 Paul explains that the only way poverty stricken people could be changed into selfless, sacrificing, generous giving people was the work of the grace of God in their lives. Simply put, the grace of God was greater than…
v. 2 – the severe trials they were experiencing
v. 2 – their extreme poverty
v. 3 – their own ability to give

Paul gives us the insight as to how exactly the transformation occurred.

v. 5 – they gave themselves first to the Lord, then to us in keeping with God’s will

There are two significant truths we need to see from verse 5:

1. Christians do more than confess sins, they offer God themselves.

a person who is a Christian is taught to offer God himself
we become a Christian by repentance and faith.
2. The Macedonians’ focused on the Lord, not a need.
they gave themselves first to the Lord, then to the need at hand.
We are motivated to give because of God’s grace, not our guilt. That is why most people dislike discussions on stewardship — it makes them feel guilty.

This is the #1 problem in sermons, studies and programs on giving. A framework of grace is not seen, known or felt. The result is that average believers gives their money to relieve their guilt and to get God to like like them.

Grace…

is being accepted by God just as you are.
is God’s incredible and unearnable love toward the unworthy and undeserving
can never be earned or repaid. It is a free gift from God to us.

When you give God your money…

it cannot be to repay God for what He has done for you, because you can’t pay God back for giving you His Son.
it cannot be to atone for your guilt, because that was done by Christ’s blood.
it cannot be to get God to love and accept you, because He has already done that through Christ.
The “New Covenant” reason to give is to honor the Lord and demonstrate generosity. It is not done out of guilt, because from God’s perspective, there’s no debt owed. Christians’ generous giving comes out of gratitude.
God’s Spirit is transforming us from being a “bucket” to becoming a “funnel”. God is changing us into people who will be a channel that flows into the lives of others.

Life Application

Here are five common traps related to money:

1. Tithing Trap

Tithing becomes a spiritual trap for us when we believe that God will not be pleased with us until we give 10%.

Tithing is for spiritual infants and spiritual children – not the mature. God commanded the Jews to give 10% because they had been in Egypt as slaves for 400 years. They had to rebuild their whole religious identity. They were spiritual children who had no discipline, no religious habits, and no sense of sacrifice.

When I was 8 years old, my parents gave me 50 cents a week for my allowance. They told me that I had to put a nickle in the offering plate every week. Why? Because I was a child and had no sense of what giving meant! The focus was on a specific, measurable amount.

There are wonderful benefits to tithing
Tithing teaches us the discipline of giving. It is a starting point. Tithing is often a difficult concept to accept. 10%? Are you kidding?
Tithing teaches us how to lay a foundation for learning generous giving.
Tithing is only a foundational concept. The goal is generous giving, not tithing! That is especially true for the rich.

I Timothy 6:17 — Command those who are rich to be generous and willing to share
Can you imagine God asking Hetty Green to give $10 million and to do her best to struggle along with the other $90 million?
Tithing teaches us the importance of trusting God, not money
Matthew 4:4 – Jesus said, Man doesn’t live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
Tithing teaches us the reality that God owns everything.
The notion of tithing leads some people to conclude that 10% of their money belongs to God and 90% belongs to them. The reality is that God owns everything, we merely manage his property. We brought nothing into this world and we will take nothing out of it.

In Isaiah’s day their offerings had become so ritual that God said they were meaningless. In Matthew 23 Jesus condemned the Pharisees for being so preoccupied with the legal tithe that they completely neglected the more important matters of justice, mercy and faithfulness. Paul said, “If I give all I have to the poor, but have not love, I gain nothing.” (I Corinthians 13:3)
2.Insurance Trap
The notion that if you regularly give your money, bad things won’t happen to you. In Job 29, the Bible says that Job was a father to the needy, rescued the poor, and took care of widows. He knew the principle of generous giving. Yet we all know what happened to him. Generous giving is not an insurance policy against difficulties and disappointments.

3. Money for Time Trap

This is the concept that generous giving relieves you from having to give your time. It’s often the way that people deal with their guilt for not being involved. Many a parent has bought his child an extravagant gift (out of guilt) to make-up for his absence.

4. Super Christian Trap

This trap is based on the belief that real generous giving, real sacrifice is for ministers, missionaries, and other super-Christians, not for normal people.
Luke 14:33 – Any of you that does not give up everything He has cannot be my disciple.

5. More Income Trap

This trap assumes that if I made more money, I would be more generous.

Years ago I remember telling God how much I would give Him, if he let me win the Reader’s Digest Sweepstakes. I sensed God saying, “Why don’t you show me how much you are willing to give out of the money I already let you have?”

The Macedonians had virtually nothing and yet found a way to be generous. In Luke 21 Jesus commend a poor widow who gave two copper coins at the temple. Our income doesn’t matter as much as we think.

In II Corinthians 9 Paul describes the marks of generous people.

Read II Corinthians 9:1-14

1. Generous people always have a plan for giving v. 2-7

they had been planning this gift for over a year
they had promised to give it
each person should give what they had planned in his heart to give
Generosity is planned. It is usually not given at the last minute.

We have all seen financial budget books. Perhaps you use one for your household budget. The purpose is to help people see where their money is going and plan where they want it to go. The budget page I saw had four major sections — fixed expenses, living expenses, business expenses, and savings. Then it had a category for everything else — Miscellaneous. On this list, giving to God’s work would be listed under miscellaneous. Do we put giving to spiritual things under “miscellaneous?” Giving people do not consider their generosity as “miscellaneous.”

2. Generous people always understand the principle of giving v. 6-11

Paul describes the principle behind New Covenant giving – the law of the harvest.
He who sows sparingly reaps sparingly.
He who sows generously reaps generously.
This is what permits the Christian to be a cheerful giver. He knows that as he shovels out, God will shovel in and God’s shovel is bigger than his.

“Reaping generously” doesn’t necessarily mean that God rewards us with money. There are many blessings other than cash.

3. Generous people always know the purpose of giving v. 11, 12, 13, 15

These verses teach that our generosity achieves two basic purposes:

God’s name — that God’s name will be thanked and praised
God’s people — that God’s people will have their needs met
(Hold up a blank check.) This is a check. In the lower left corner of a check we usually write what the check is for. If we give a check to God’s work, what would we write on this line?
Do we give because God is short of cash? No, it’s for the name of God.
It’s for the kingdom of God.
It’s for the glory of God.
NOT the building payment
The Wise Men also worshiped with their generous giving.
NOT to impress someone.
NOT to meet the church budget
NOT for a tax deduction
NOT to relieve guilt
We give that God’s name on earth may be exalted and expanded.
We give that God’s people may be helped, encouraged and served by our generous giving.

A WORSHIP LEADER JOB DESCRIPTION

A WORSHIP LEADER JOB DESCRIPTION
Is There Life After Picking Songs?

I. Introduction
A. Worship leaders are part of a long line of musical leadership in the church.
Growing influence in recent decades.

“For many young people choosing a church, worship leaders have
become a more important factor than preachers. Mediocre preaching may
be tolerated, but an inept worship leader can sink things fast.” (Gordon
MacDonald, To Find a Worship Leader, Leadership Journal, Spring 2002)

B. Many churches have exaggerated the significance of this role.
1. No clear model in the New Testament of a prominent musical
leader.
2. Jesus is our primary worship leader (1 Tim. 2:5; Heb. 10:19-22).
3. The church can worship God without a “worship leader.”
C. But every week those who lead congregational worship have significant
opportunities to teach, train, and encourage God’s people in praising him
rightly and living for his glory.

II. Goals of the Worship Leader
A faithful worship leader
magnifies the greatness of God in Jesus Christ
through the power of the Holy Spirit
by skillfully combining God’s Word with music,
thereby motivating the gathered church
to proclaim the gospel,
to cherish God’s presence,
and to live for God’s glory.

III. A faithful worship leader
A. God calls leaders to be faithful. (1 Cor. 4:1-2)
1. Success, popularity, and creativity aren’t our primary goals.
2. God defines our ministry – not us.
B. We’re to lead with “zeal.” (Rom. 12:8)
C. Faithfulness isn’t always appreciated.
1. Make sure you’re not being dumb, like radically changing the form
or style without explanation.
2. Our ultimate goal is to hear “well done, good and faithful servant.”

IV. Magnifies the Greatness of God in Jesus Christ
“Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable”
(Psalm 145:3).
A. The appropriate starting place for worship is magnifying the unsearchable
greatness of God. (Ps. 29:1)
We must not allow ourselves to be satisfied with vague ideas of the love of
Christ which present nothing of his glory to our minds. (John Owen, The
Glory of Christ, pg. 54)
“All true worship is a response to the self-revelation of God in Christ and
Scripture, and arises from our reflection on who He is and what He has
done….The worship of God is evoked, informed, and inspired by the
vision of God….The true knowledge of God will always lead us to worship.
(John Stott, Authentic Christianity, pg. 250)
1. Includes making his works big in the eyes of those we lead.
2. He is our Creator, Sustainer, Provider, Protector, and Redeemer

B. In Jesus Christ
1. The greatest “work” of God is presenting His only Son as a sacrifice
of atonement for our sins, so that we might enjoy forgiveness and
fellowship with Him forever. (Rom. 3:23-26)
“There can be no doubt that for the New Testament writers as a
whole it was the cross that was at the heart of the faith. In the literal
sense of the term it was ‘crucial.’ We are saved, not by some fine
theory and not by some blinding revelation and certainly not by our
own best effort, but by Christ’s atoning death.” (Leon Morris, The
Atonement, It’s Meaning and Significance, 12).
2. Why the cross is crucial to worship
a. For our access to God (Heb. 10:19-22)
b. For acceptable worship (1 Pet. 2:4-5)
c. For God’s glory (2 Cor. 4:6)
In Christ we behold the wisdom, goodness, love, grace,
mercy and power of God all working together for the great
work of our redemption and salvation. The wisdom and love
of God are in themselves infinitely glorious. But we cannot
see how glorious they are except in the redemption and
salvation of the church which is achieved only in and by
Christ.

V. Through the Power of the Holy Spirit
A. All worship is impossible apart from the activity of the Holy Spirit. (Phil.
3:3)
B. Involves listening for the direction of the Holy Spirit before, during and at
the close of the meeting.
“For Paul the gathered church was first of all a worshiping community; and
the key to their worship was the presence of the Holy Spirit.” (Gordon Fee,
God’s Empowering Presence, pg. 884)

VI. By Skillfully Combining God’s Word
A. Worship is always a response to God’s revelation of himself in his Word.
B. Many ways we can skillfully highlight God’s Word

VII. With Music
Col. 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing
one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with
thankfulness in your hearts to God.
A. Music helps us remember God’s Word
B. Music helps us respond emotionally to God’s Word
The duty of singing praises to God seems to be given wholly to excite and
express religious affections. There is no other reason why we should
express ourselves to God in verse rather than in prose and with music,
except that these things have a tendency to move our affections.
C. Music helps us display God’s glory.
1. Through excellence.
2. Through variety.

VIII. Thereby motivating the gathered church
A. Not demanding, manipulating, or projecting guilt on the gathered church.
B. Motivating by grace.

IX. To Proclaim the Gospel
Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. (Ps. 96:2)
A. Biblical worship involves and leads to proclamation.
B. We need to help people see the connection between their lives and the
Gospel.
a. The Gospel and our sin (Eph. 1:7)
b. The Gospel and our sanctification (Rom. 6:10-11; 1 Pet.
2:24)
c. The Gospel and our suffering (Rom. 5:1-5)
d. The Gospel and our unbelief (Rom. 8:32)

X. To Cherish God’s Presence
A. We want to cherish God’s presence in all its manifestations.
B. Enjoy God’s promised presence.
C. Pursue God’s active presence.
D. Anticipate God’s unveiled presence.

XI. And to live for God’s Glory.
A. Worship doesn’t end when the singing stops.
B. Biblically speaking, there is no sacred/secular distinction in our lives. All of
life is meant to be lived in the presence of God, for the glory of God.
Fundamentally…worship in the New Testament means believing the
gospel and responding with one’s whole life and being to the person and
work of God’s Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
